Defining a Product Version

The version number is written according to the following rules:

type	Notation	explanation
Major version	1.x (first digit)	A major version number is changed when the underlying architecture of the current product changes or when major new features or tools are added.
Minor Version	1.1 (second digit)	The minor version number changes when new features are added or bugs are fixed within the major version provided. A new minor version release includes all service packs and patches provided between the release of the previous minor version and the release of the new minor version (but does not include patches provided separately).
Service Packs	1.1 SPx	It refers to a collection of patches and enhancement modules issued after the release of a minor version.

Product Sales and Support Lifecycle
