What is telework?

Telework is a term that refers to a flexible working style that utilizes information and communication technology (ICT), allowing employees to work at convenient times away from their home office, without being tied to location or time. The word is a combination of the words "tele," which means remote, and "work," which means to work.

Typical examples of telework include telecommuting, working from home, working in a satellite office, choosing a facility other than the main office, and mobile work, working while on the go or on the train.

Teleworking is considered one of the effective ways to achieve work style reform (reforms that allow workers to choose from a variety of work styles according to their individual circumstances). However, since around 2020, with the spread of COVID-19 and the issuance of the state of emergency declaration, teleworking has been rapidly adopted in Japan.
