What is OCR?

OCR (Optical Character Reader) is a technology that reads characters written on paper, such as handwritten or printed materials, using a scanner or other device and converts them into text data that can be used by a computer.

OCR is often used to digitize and utilize large volumes of paper documents. Converting the characters written in documents into text data improves searchability and makes it easier to share and utilize data. Furthermore, when inputting documents such as invoices and delivery notes into an IT system, using OCR to read the characters can significantly reduce the time required compared to manual data input, leading to cost reductions and improved business quality.

In recent years, smartphones and tablet devices have also been equipped with OCR functions, making it easy to convert text information from business cards, brochures, handwritten notes, and more into text data.
