What is migration?

Migration is the process of moving systems and data from a current environment to a new environment. In English, it means "moving," "transferring," or "relocating."

For example, this applies when migrating the equipment, operating system, and applications that make up an existing information system to a newly introduced system, or when migrating from on-premise to the cloud. Migration can also be used when migrating an existing database system to another database system, or when migrating the operating system used on a server or workstation to a different type of operating system. It is used when completely renewing equipment or software, rather than just replacing parts of it.

There are various types of migration, but migrating an old system (legacy system) to a new system is called "legacy migration," and migrating data to a different environment or system is called "data migration."
