What is the GIGA School Initiative?

The GIGA School Initiative is an initiative to promote the use of ICT in educational settings by providing each child and student nationwide in compulsory education with a computer or tablet device and establishing a high-speed internet environment in schools. GIGA stands for Global and Innovation Gateway for All, meaning "a global and innovative gateway for everyone." The GIGA School Initiative was launched by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2019.

Initially, the GIGA School Initiative was planned to be implemented over a five-year period starting in fiscal 2019. However, the spread of COVID-19 has increased the need for online classes and learning, so the schedule for introducing devices has been significantly accelerated. As a result, as of 2022, the provision of at least one device per student has been nearly completed in both elementary and junior high schools. Going forward, in order to utilize digital content on one device per student in all classes, it will be necessary to improve the ICT skills and IT literacy of teachers and staff, resolve security issues, and properly manage devices.
