The Flipped Interaction Pattern (Please ask if you have any questions)

This glossary explains various keywords that will help you understand the mindset necessary for data utilization and successful DX.
This time, we will introduce "The Flipped Interaction Pattern," a technique for utilizing conversational AI using large-scale language models such as ChatGPT.

The Flipped Interaction Pattern (Please ask if you have any questions)

The Flipped Interaction Pattern (please ask if you have any questions) is a prompt creation technique used when utilizing conversational AI such as ChatGPT.
When using ChatGPT, users often devise input methods to get a good output (response), but this technique allows ChatGPT to request the information it wants the user to enter, thereby ensuring the desired output is obtained.

When not to use this technique

First, let's try using ChatGPT without this technique. At the time of writing, some of the most effective ways to use it are to ask for ideas or to identify tasks.

For example, let's say your boss suddenly asks you to set up a booth at a soccer game to promote apples, but you don't know anyone in the company who knows the details, so you're in trouble and don't know where to start. In that situation, try asking ChatGPT for advice.

We decided to set up a stall at a soccer match to promote our apples.
What do you need to do?

To set up a stall at a soccer match and promote apples, you need to follow these steps:

  1. Obtain Permits: Obtain permits from the soccer venue or event organizers to set up your stall.
  2. Decide on a location: Find the best location within the stadium to attract customers.
  3. Apple Display: Create a striking display of fresh, delicious looking apples.
  4. Offer samples: Offer apple samples to fans at the game to show them how delicious they are.
  5. Provide information about apples: Provide information about apples, including their nutritional value, health benefits, and recommended ways to eat them.
  6. Sales Promotion: Encourage people to buy apples by offering discounts and special offers.
  7. Branding: Highlight the brand and origin of your apples to impress your audience.
  8. Promotion on social media and websites: Share information about the event on social media and websites to spread awareness of apples.

By following these steps, you can effectively promote apples at soccer games.

They do create a proposal for now, but the proposals they come up with are not necessarily appropriate for the purpose you want to use them for.

Considering the situation where you're asking even though you don't understand, questions like this are often given as prompts. As a result, it will likely clarify what you need to do, and you may even realize that you had overlooked something, such as "I hadn't thought about social media."

However, unfortunately, this does not mean that someone who "knows nothing at all" can use this as a reference to prepare for an event on their own. It is generally said that ChatGPT can only understand the text written in the input, so you need to write more clearly what kind of output (answer) you want. However, since you are asking because you "don't know anything at all," it is a bit difficult to ask clear questions and expect to get the answers you need if you don't.

Ask ChatGPT for the necessary information

In such a situation, you can use the technique of "getting ChatGPT to ask questions." Try adding questions you would like them to ask because you don't know what you need to do.

We decided to set up a stall at a soccer match to promote our apples.
Although I am the person in charge, I have never been involved in setting up a booth at an event and have no idea about anything.
I need to report to my boss by a deadline what I need to do in the first week to prepare. What should I check and report?
I would like a very specific list of tasks to make my event stand a success.
Before answering, please ask me for any missing information or anything you don't understand.

Regarding preparations for participating in an event, I have the following questions about what to check and report in the first week.

  1. When is the event date?
  2. What is your budget for opening a store?
  3. Have you already been in contact with the event organizer?
  4. What kind of apples do you want to promote? Are there any particular brands or regions?
  5. How many staff will be required to open a store? Also, will you arrange them in-house or from outside?

Based on this information, we will suggest a list of specific tasks to accomplish during your first week.

When I added "Please ask before answering," ChatGPT asked me for the missing information. This way, instead of struggling to think about the answer I wanted and writing additional prompts, I can just ask for the input I need. Now, let's try answering.

  1. The event will take place on August 21st. It is now February 14th.
  2. The budget is set at 10 million yen, but it can be increased.
  3. I have confirmed that I can exhibit, but I have not yet been contacted.
  4. We would like to promote apples from Aomori.
  5. I don't know how many staff members are needed, so I'd like to know. I'm in charge of on-site management, and two of my subordinates will be working on the project. If more staff members are needed, we'll need to hire someone from outside.

Here is a list of specific tasks to complete in the first week of preparing for an event:

  1. Communicate with the event organizer: Find out details about the stall location, setup and teardown rules, stall fees, and required paperwork and permits.
  2. Research apple suppliers: Research and get quotes from reliable suppliers of Aomori apples.
  3. Review your budget: Review your budget based on quotes from suppliers, and also take into account display, advertising, and staff costs.
  4. Display and advertising design: Create design proposals for apple display methods, tasting corners, and brochures and posters that provide information about apples.
  5. Consider the number of staff and their roles: In addition to the three in-house staff, consider whether to hire external staff. If external staff are required, consider the number of staff and their roles.
  6. Consider promotions: Consider ways to encourage people to buy apples by offering discounts or special offers.
  7. Create a schedule: Create a schedule for your event that includes these tasks.

What to report:

  • Information obtained from the event organizer (such as booth location, setup and removal rules, booth fees, required documents and permits, etc.)
  • Aomori apple supplier research results and estimates
  • Budget review results
  • Display and advertising design proposals
  • Results of review of staff numbers and roles
  • Results of sales promotion measures
  • Event schedule

Complete these tasks within the first week and report them to your manager. By continuing to follow the schedule, you can ensure your event is a success. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.

There are still some areas that are different from what was requested, such as the staff not being able to answer when asked how many people are generally needed, but it is much more useful than the initial response.

Furthermore, you can correct the output by responding to the answer or making additional requests, and have ChatGPT ask you the necessary information repeatedly, which will lead to a better answer.

IT that can be used without even explicitly expressing your wishes

There are various ways to use IT systems, but in many cases it is not easy to do something you do not understand.

For example, if data is stored in an internal data base and you want to extract the results you need, you have to write the necessary queries using SQL or similar. You can get the results you need by searching, but if you don't know what to search for or how to search for it, you can't use it effectively.

ChatGPT is sometimes said to enable information processing using natural language, but this technique can also be seen as a way to obtain the information you need even in situations where you lack the knowledge to create search criteria.

Generative AI has brought about a shift from "creating something yourself through programming" to "communicating your needs and getting the results you want." Furthermore, you can even ask ChatGPT to do the work of compiling your needs without you having to do it yourself (or even if you don't know what you don't know), which can be seen as an example of how IT is being used in a style never before seen.
