What is STEM Education?

STEM Education is Education approach that focuses on four academic fields: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Its aim is to cultivate individuals who can adapt to the future IT and global society and contribute to the advancement of science and technology by acquiring knowledge and skills in these fields from a young age.

STEM Education has been implemented in countries around the world, including the United States, and is being led by the Education. While emerging countries in Europe and Asia are also focusing on STEM Education, Japan is currently lagging considerably behind other countries. Therefore, the Japanese government made programming Education compulsory in elementary schools from the 2020 academic year. Furthermore, it is promoting the establishment of related research institutions such as the "Japan STEM Education Society" and supporting Super Science High Schools.

Challenges in STEM Education in Japan include the lack of established teaching methods and a shortage of teachers with sufficient knowledge and skills. Improvements are expected in the future, including improvements to the teaching system and IT infrastructure.
