What is VUCA?

VUCA is an acronym made up of the first letters of Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. It refers to a situation in society or business that is rapidly changing, complex, ambiguous, and with increasing uncertainty, making it difficult to predict the future.

VUCA was first used as a military term in the 1990s to describe the increasingly opaque and complex international situation following the end of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. In the 2010s, the term evolved to describe the rapidly changing landscape of technology, the natural environment, politics, the economy, values, and social systems.

In today's VUCA era, various factors such as technology and the natural environment are intertwined, often causing unexpected events that have a major impact on business and management.
