What is Society 5.0?

Society 5.0 is a human-centered future society that combines real space (physical space) and virtual space (cyberspace) to achieve both economic development and the resolution of social issues. Also known as a "super smart society," it can refer to the future society itself, or to the concepts and initiatives to realize that society.

Society 5.0 was proposed as the type of society Japan should aim for in the government's "Fifth Science and Technology Basic Plan." Society 5.0 is positioned as a scientific and technological revolution (innovation) that will create a new society, following on from hunter-gatherer, agricultural, industrial, and information societies.

Society 5.0 is supported by digital innovation brought about by advanced technologies such as IoT, big data, AI, and robotics. In Society 5.0, information collected by sensors in the real world is accumulated in a virtual space, and this big data is analyzed by AI and then fed back to people in the real world. This system is expected to bring new value and industries to society that are different from what has been seen before.
